Stompbox: 100 Pedals of the World’s Greatest Guitarists

Stompbox: 100 Pedals of the World’s Greatest Guitarists, is a deluxe celebration of the unsung hero of guitar music–the effects pedal.

Stompbox showcases the actual effects pedals owned and used by Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Frank Zappa, Alex Lifeson, Andy Summers, Eric Johnson, Adrian Belew, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Ed O’Brien, J Mascis, Lita Ford, Joe Perry, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, Vernon Reid, Kaki King, Nels Cline and 82 other iconic and celebrated guitarists.

These exquisitely textured fine-art photographs are matched with fresh, insightful commentary and colorful road stories from the artists themselves, who describe how these fascinating and often devilish devices shaped their sounds and songs.

A visual treat for obsessive collectors, guitar players, and music fans, Stompbox reveals the essential but lesser-known marvels behind some of rock ‘n’ roll’s signature sounds.

Book features and structure:

100 Pedals. Featuring an interview with the artist and a photo of the chosen pedal. The interview explores the artist’s personal connection to their chosen pedal. The pedal photo receives a full page with the interview on the adjacent page.

Vintage & Rarities: 333 Cool, Crazy and Hard to Find Guitar Pedals

A companion book to Stompbox: 100 Pedals of the World’s Greatest Guitarists

Originally created to expand the sound of the electric guitar, stompboxes have become collectible, highly-fetishized objets d’art, often prized as much for their looks, quirks and history as for their sonic properties.

Photographer Eilon Paz and writer/editor Dan Epstein—the team behind Stompbox: 100 Pedals of the World’s Greatest Guitarists—have scoured the globe in search of some of the rarest, weirdest and most iconic stompboxes in existence. Vintage & Rarities: 333 Cool, Crazy and Hard to Find Guitar Pedals features lustrous, exquisitely-detailed photographs of primitive fuzzboxes, one-off prototypes, whimsical boutique creations and elaborate multi-effects units—many of which have never been seen before, even by hardcore collectors.

Vintage & Rarities also features profiles of 25 pedal collectors from around the world—including legendary musicians Adrian Belew, Henry Kaiser and David Torn, Beastie Boys producer Mario Caldato Jr., and celebrated pedal builders Oliver Ackermann (Death By Audio), Mike Piera (Analog Man) and Josh Scott (JHS)—all of whom share their personal tales of stompbox addiction, while offering additional insight into these fascinating devices.

  1. Luca Sapio (verified owner)

Precious like a bible for a preacher. Crazy features and impossible to find pedals. This is not a book is an experience. Highly recommended!!!!!

  2. Humphrey Barclay (verified owner)

I ordered the “Brick” and am still in awe at its righteousness. There has been a deliberate emphasis on obscurities not previously covered anywhere. Great photos, background, interviews. A downside for collectors – some previously under the radar rarities are now “known”. Astonishing.

  3. Andras Lajer (verified owner)

The books are absolutely awesome. I’m feeling like an older kid in a wonderland who knows that he might not have everything but if he opens these books he can just dive into his pedal dreams. Thanks Eilon and your whole team for creating these masterpieces!

  4. Michael Mandel (verified owner)

Just got the brick. The books and photography are absolutely gorgeous! You guys did such a beautiful and loving job on this project. Cannot wait for you next one, please do one on guitars!

  5. Chris Pieretti

The book is amazing. Excellent images, great list of players talking about their sound and a whole ton of pedals to obsess over. Highly recommended for any musician, gear head or music lover whose life was saved by rock n roll.

  6. Francesco Minotti (verified owner)

Amazing job done on these books! This is the result of certainly spasmodic research: very detailed and hard to find informations. The binding and pages are of high quality, and the poster also is beautiful! A must-have for the pedals geeks!!!

  7. Dobbin Buck (verified owner)

I received the Brick today and have been glued to it since its arrival! The quality of the imagery and content is amazing! The binding, additional poster and slipcase are top quality. I will be enjoying and referencing these texts for years to come and I cannot express enough gratitude to the author for providing such a well researched, entertaining and important chronicle of pedals and their champions! Bravo a hundred times over!

  8. Andy Schwartz (verified owner)

These two books are the quintessential compendium for the stomp box fan and for feeding the effect pedal bug. Really great collection of anecdotal tales of the players, collectors, fans, and makers throughout. Highly detailed photography and attractive layout to boot. Any musician, admirer of gear, or music lover would do wise to have this in their library. Well done, Eilon and Dan!

  9. Kristian Hüsen (verified owner)

I just received my copy of the brick the other day, and I`m blown away by it. I was already a fan after seeing Elon on the JHS Show, but actually seeing and feeling the quality of it, is just great. I haven´t seen such a meticulously made book so far – the printing quality is outstanding. The photos are so compelling, you almost want to grab and turn those knobs! The stories behind the pedals presented are inspiring, to say the least. It´s a feast for the eyes and a true piece of Rock and Roll history. Thanks, Eilon, for putting so much dedication into the project

  10. John R. (verified owner)

I was very impressed with the look of the brick. Once I opened the books I was blown away. They are beautifully done with excellent writing and information. If you or someone you know is a guitar enthusiast these books are must haves!

  11. Bart Provoost (Effects Database)

I recently received my copy of The Brick and both books are definitely in my top 3 of most beautiful guitar pedal books ever made! (only “Level & Attack” aka “The Tone Bender Book” is comparable, but not available anymore).

Eilon, you really did a great job!

  12. Jeff Hoedebeck

Any fan of Dust and Grooves knows that Eilon takes his subjects seriously and does his homework. Eilon’s projects take years to complete and always evolve during production in order to deliver a complete story yet always seem to uncover new stories along the way . His reputation for delivering a quality final product with stunning photographic artistry and great technical stories lives on with Stompbox. His ability to provide the masses with historical context about a unique subculture and shine a light on those who deserve to have their story told and visualized is second to none. It is simply a reference point for generations to come.

  13. Will Scharvogel (verified owner)

Being a huge fan of Dust and Grooves, I couldn’t wait to see your newest project. I purchased two sets as gifts for friends who play guitar, and they were truly blown away by the work of art they received! Their reaction to receiving the Brick was priceless – It is truly a stunning piece inside and out, with the perfect balance of amazing imagery and unique stories. It is and an awesome addition that can be appreciated in any music lover’s library. Thank You!

That Brick is art. I would definitely build my house with such material ! Love at first sting.
Featuring pretty pictures, nice array of pedal freaks and cool backstories.
There are not much books about pedals, especially because of the infinite resources found on the internet that MAY lead to think that such project is useless.
BUT !… If you can’t get those mighty pedals in hands, for real, at least these books are way more sexy objects that smartphone or laptop. You almost feel like you can touch it.
So, treat yourself and contact Santa Claus right now 😉

  15. Kevin Brown

The Brick and both books are lovingly put together both in terms of content and physically (nice quality paper and printing), beautifully photographed and endlessly fascinating. This is a must for any pedalhead or anyone who is interested in sound or electronics. It’s an incredible resource and I’d highly recommended it. I am desperately trying not to treat the books as a shopping list though… ?

  16. Ward Lucas (verified owner)

A true labour of love . And because there are so much rare pedals around , that it is impossible to stuff them into a couple of books , I hope for another Brick in the future. If not , then this is the best and most complete there is .

  17. Jay Smith (verified owner)

LOVE IT! So amazing. The photography is glorious and everything about it is done at such a high level. Says a lot about you too Eilon, and wanting to do great work, and have such care and attention to detail in every aspect of the end product. I was blown away that you even had the inside of the slip case printed. So many great details about the books from a creative standpoint. Of course I am also very jealous that someone else got to design it! I could not be happier with this book so far, as I learn about so many old pedals I had no clue existed. Such a top-notch, first rate book, in every way!

  18. Marco Meroni (verified owner)

    I recently received The Brick.
When i opened both books i smiled.
The books are amazing, made with high quality materials.
Great stories, rarities and highly detailed photos, you can barely touch the pedals and turn all the knobs.
Eilon and the whole team did an AMAZING job.
    Thank you!

  19. Damian (verified owner)

Very excited for having this in my book shelf, both quality and content are excellent, if you’re all into music gear and pedals, this should be in your possession as well

  20. Anthony Burke

Thank for creating this masterpiece. It’s an epic book in every way . There’s a lot of incredible information to take in , more than I had anticipated.
The photography is truly amazing and we all know stompboxes are actually the coolest of things on the planet .
So that makes you guys very, very cool . You wrote a book on them … and all the love shines through.
    Thank you

This is a masterpiece! It definitely can help me to dip inside the pedal world. Love it!

  23. Jared Sapp

What an amazing book that every guitar enthusiast should own. Absolutely love the aesthetic of the design used all over the book. It’s modern and Rock N Roll all at the same time. It’s impressive and I’ve always wanted more coffee book hard back books celebrating my biggest passion in life

  24. Jaakko Wirtanen

    Stompbox The Brick
Long anticipated and timely, an instant classic, truly original, now here to stay.
Entertaining, meaningful, fulfilling, nothing to be taken lightly here.
The seriousness of music has called for it.
Though being a relatively young instrument, the guitar has proven to be a force to be reckoned with.
A treasure chest full of accurate and important information, an artwork in and of itself.
It is a revelation of the art that has spoken to us before, now speaking to us again in a rare visual format.
This had to be done, question was who would do it first.
Let us support a good cause so this can take off and possibly be done again.

I love “The Brick” – outstanding photography, a good amount of hard to come by information and a fine selection of the music world‘s most important, most sought after and sometimes most mysterious guitar effects pedals. Thank you Eilon and the whole team, you did an amazing job!

  26. Johnny Steiro (@boss_pedal_collector) (verified owner)

I got the Brick just in time for Christmas, it’s a work of art and for us pedal nerds it’s a must-have in the bookshelf. Expensive but worth every dollar.

  27. Erika Green (verified owner)

I got this bad boy right when it came out, for my musician boyfriend. HE IS ABSOLUTELY THRILLED WITH IT. Full disclosure, Dan E. is also our awesome friend. Me, I’m a designer, and am really enjoying the design of this book – stellar! Really well done, gorgeous book, exhaustive research!

  28. Peter Baylis (verified owner)

This set of books really does hit you like a brick. Every page feels like sacred text. It truly is a piece of art!

  29. RedPedalBestPedal

Awesome box set, great gift for any collector. Slight smudging on the white covers from the print inside the brick. However it wiped right off and they’re sparkling clean now.

  30. Nick Sidella

To ANY guitar pedal enthusiast, this is an absolute MUST! In addition to featuring an incredible assortment of artists and their gear, both books feature a wealth of content from all of the artists featured. It cannot be understated how much knowledge is soaked into these pages! This isn’t a coffee table book that sits as a decoration. These are the Sacred Scrolls of pedal knowledge!

  31. Will Walden

Super in depth, wonderfully photographed, and delightful to read. A must have for any music nerd!!!

  32. james tucker (verified owner)

I bought your books after seeing you on the JHS Pedals show. Not only are they awesome, but the quality is exceptional. I have written all in mine and read them several times. But they have also turned me on to some cool music I have never heard. Well worth the price. Thanks for making my world a little bigger. I have enjoyed these books for hours upon end, much like a good pedal.I hope you are healthy and happy.
    God bless, Tucker

  33. Flemmy E (verified owner)

I have bought the brick and I still find new information and new great pictures. This book is a must if you like pedals!

  34. Tim Cunningham (verified owner)

My brick just arrived, have barely sratched the surface and already in love with these beautful books. The photos are amazing and there’s so much info about the pedals, players and people that dreamt them up – can’t wait to delve deeper. Much more than a reference piece, these are objects of art in their own right. My darling wife (not really into pedals) has already insisted they belong in the house, not my studio/workshop:) Victory for all.

  35. Andy Labarge (verified owner)

Everything about these books is great! The photos are excellent, almost like holding the pedal in your hand. The text is really well done. I am constantly going to Spotify while reading so I can listen to the songs/sounds the artists talk about using the pedal on. I have a lot of guitar and amp books sitting around, but I can see that I’m going to be going back to these more than any of them.

  36. Brent Hoskins (verified owner)

Amazing! A Must have for any musician.
I can’t say enough about how awesome these books are (I got the brick). So inspiring to see all these pedals and some of my recording heroes’ gear. I’ve learned a lot about pedals I’ve never seen before and some that I have myself. Great work all around!!

  37. Pedal Pimp

Great reference for anyone serious about guitar effects pedals!

  38. Trevor May (verified owner)

I laughed, I cried, I drooled. I thought about all those old pedals I gave away. Wish I had kept them all!

  39. Chris Edmonds

Just got my boxed set of @StompBoxBook! It’s a MUST for music fans interested in learning how 100 guitarists created their tone with the help of these magical pedals. The photos of these relics after decades of use are stunning. Great resource –

  40. Filip

This book set is just pure magic! Something you will enjoy and discover over and over as there is so much to absorb. I can almost smell, taste and hear those pedals. I have not found anything else like it.

  41. Fabian (verified owner)

These two books are invaluable for the pedal gear enthusiast, history buff, and overall the information here is amazing for adding to any compendium.
